Educating Medical Professionals on Ventilator Use

The organization: As the coronavirus pandemic raged across the U.S. during the spring of 2020, The Learning Agency teamed up with Harvard Medical School, St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, edX, and the American Association for Respiratory Care. This collaboration combined a diverse set of expertise with the ultimate goal of creating critical training for those providing care during the COVID-19 pandemic

The need: With doctors and nurses in short supply, hospitals needed to quickly train-up non-ICU hospital clinicians to support the critical care teams that were on the front line of the pandemic. There was a particular need for additional education on providing mechanical ventilation support for COVID-19 patients, so the partner organizations launched a quality training program as quickly as possible with additional support from The Learning Agency

Our role: Our partners at Harvard Medical School, St. Michael’s Hospital, edX, and the American Association for Respiratory Care, worked to quickly and effectively develop and launch an online course to educate medical professionals on the use of ventilators, and The Learning Agency team worked to support this endeavor.

Developed within a few weeks and offered for free to the medical community, “Mechanical Ventilation for COVID-19” has enrolled more than 350,000 professionals. By the end of 2020, the course was the second most popular COVID-19-related online class of the year, according to EdSurge.

The course — a mix of videos and required readings — covered everything from the principles and physiology of mechanical ventilation to how standard ventilation practices are different in COVID-19 patients. Professionals who completed the class and passed an exit quiz received credits toward their professional learning requirements.
