In the wake of COVID, there has been a resurgence of interest in deploying research and evidence to solve the steepest challenges in education. But for Knowledge Alliance, this has been their mission for over five decades. Knowledge Alliance, composed of leading education organizations like Mathematica and Wested, advocates for the use of rigorous research to improve teaching and learning. In an interview with 5 Questions, Knowledge Alliance’s President and CEO, Rachel Dinkes, discusses her organization’s passion for this work, the role they play in shaping federal policy, and the partnerships they forge to get evidence-based strategies into the classroom.
What is Knowledge Alliance and what should people know about it?
For over 50 years, Knowledge Alliance has promoted the use of rigorous research to figure out “what works,” and why, in improving student outcomes and then the sharing of those findings with policymakers, practitioners and the general public. Comprised of 24 leading education organizations, KA and its members share the belief that high-quality, relevant research is key to solving the biggest education problems facing our country today. Our members share the mission to collectively elevate the creation and use of rigorous research and evidence to bring about systems change, sustainable resources, equitable public education, and access to opportunity for all. We believe the effective use of rigorous research and evidence is integral to improving learning and outcomes for every student.
Why is Knowledge Alliance important?
Our members bring their vast expertise and on-the-ground experience to the policy making process to make federal policy more effective, equitable, and evidence-based. We know research, technical assistance, data, and evaluation are necessary to ensure that policy makers can make informed decisions, teachers have timely data, and students have better outcomes. Knowledge Alliance is important because we are committed to federal advocacy for programs that do just that.

What's been the biggest surprise for you so far in your leadership of Knowledge Alliance?
The biggest surprise has been how well-regarded Knowledge Alliance is on Capitol Hill and in the executive branch. It has been remarkable to see how frequently the Department of Education and Congress seek out the thoughts and expertise of our members. This recognition underscores the value and influence of our coalition.
Where do you see Knowledge Alliance and its role in the education R&D ecosystem in five years?
In five years, I see Knowledge Alliance and the federal programs we support playing an even more integral role in education R&D. I see a heightened understanding of the critical role that programs such as the Regional Educational Laboratories, the Comprehensive Centers, and Education Innovation and Research, as well as other programs and activities of the Institute of Education Sciences, play in the education R&D ecosystem. These programs and activities have already improved learning opportunities for millions of students by enabling educators to make informed, research-based decisions on the most effective programs, how to implement evidence-based practices, and how to assist the lowest-performing schools.
Policymakers at all levels of government rely on the findings from these programs to allocate taxpayer resources effectively. Over the next five years, I anticipate a greater federal investment in these programs, which will help states and districts better respond to rapidly increasing needs. This increased support will lead to improved outcomes for students and schools, solidifying the importance of evidence-based practices in shaping the future of education. Knowledge Alliance will continue to be a leading advocate in this effort, ensuring that research findings are translated into practical, impactful actions that benefit educators and students.
